The 4-4-0 is a wheel arrangement. 4 leading wheels, 4 driving wheels, and no trailing wheels. It's the iconic engine of the USA, and was dubbed the American, due to it's wide use in the US during the 19th century. it was a durable engine, and could run on some very rough laid track. It could be found on both Passenger and Freight trains. A very beautiful engine indeed. I personally love the 1875 8-18c model built by baldwin. Those numbers mean 8 is the diameter of the cylinder, 18 is the length of the stroke, and C designates it as a 8 wheeled locomotive.
I'm a big fan of the NRM at York - fine collection of engines and cars as well as a fully functional repair shop for engine overhauls. Their broaching machine for shaping wheels is a sight to behold
I guess the old basic steam locomotive , was that the 4-4-0 you were talking about Lachlan ?
